James Albert Love was born in 1830 in England
to Robert & Sarah Love.
Little is know about his early life in England
and I have not been able to find out if he
had any other family.
The first record I can find of James is
when he is convicted in the Clerkenwell Court,
Middlesex, England on 10 November, 1847 to
7 years for stealing a small piece of lead
pipe worth 5 shillings.
During 1848, the British Colonial Secretary,
Earl Grey, was confronted by a problem. The
free settlers in the Australian colonies
had put a stop to transportation in 1842,
declaring that they no longer wanted Britain's
convicts in their new land. As a result,
British prisons were overflowing. Earl Grey
came up with a plan to 'solve' the problem.
Earl Grey decided to reduce the numbers
of British prisoners by reintroducing transportation.
He knew that this would be unpopular with
the Colonials, so he guaranteed the convicts
a Ticket of Leave upon arrival in Australia.
Therefore, they were technically no longer
convicts. He was sending our 'free' convicts.
James left England aboard the convict ship
'Adelaide' on 17August 1849 heading for Hobart, Van
Diemens Land, Australia. The 'Adelaide' was a 640 ton class AE1 ship built in Calcutta,
India in 1832.
The 'Adelaide' departed from the Port of London on 17August
1849. The 'Adelaide' was carrying 303 male convicts. The route
was from Portland and she arrived in Hobart,
Van Dieman's Land after a journey of 104
days on 29 November, 1849 - 40 men were unloaded
there.
The next stop was Port Phillip, Victoria
but the 'Adelaide' was refused entry and so they continued
on. Their journey ended at Port Jackson,
Sydney on 24 December, 1849.
The City of Sydney didn't want to accept
these exiles either, but all convicts on
board disembarked here. The 'Adelaide' was the last convict ship to New South Wales.
Their journey had taken them 129 days.
Some of the convicts were put on board the 'Shamrock' and taken to Broulee and Eden.
James arrived in Eden on 31 December, 1849
and was granted a "Ticket of Leave"
in the District of Broulee - Ticket No 49/1337.
Shortly after his arrival he was employed
at the hotel at Boydtown.
James lived for a number of years in Eden,
acquiring the Palestine Estate, but in 1882
he moved to Towamba where, for many years,
he carried the mail between Towamba and Nangutta
and was conversant with the period when pack
bullocks were used to convey produce to port.
He was employed for many years by Alex Weatherhead
at Nangutta Station.
He went to Ballarat to mine for gold at one
stage and then returned to the Towamba district
where he lived at Pericoe and this property
was called Love's Valley and in later years
owned by the Porada family.
James married three times and had 17 children.
James' first wife was Mary Maddeson Hite
who was born in 1842 at Little Pewton, Hungtingshire,
England. Mary was the daughter of Thomas
Hite and Jane Thorpe.
James and Mary had 7 children and Mary died
on 2 July, 1871 and is buried in the Eden
Cemetery.
James then married Ellen Hart who was born
27 March, 1849 in Bristol, England, to Mary
Ann Hart.
James and Ellen had 11 children and Ellen
died on 9 November, 1900 and is buried in
the Towamba Cemetery. Ellen's uncle was Richard
Hart who lived in the Pambula/Lochiel area
and her aunt was Elizabeth Hart who married
George Martin who was the oldest resident
in Towamba - he lived to 104 years and is
buried in the Towamba Cemetery.
James' third wife was Matilda Newlyn whom
he married on 2 December, 1902 in Eden, NSW.
James and Matilda did not have any children.
Matilda married Daniel Power in 1908 in Eden
after James passed away.
James died in 14 August 1906 and is buried
in the Eden Cemetery with his first wife
Mary.
