Rocky Hall was on the original road between
the Far South Coast and the Monaro (via Big
Jack Mountain) surveyed by Ben BOYD in the
1840s. It became quite a large settlement
with shops, a couple of hotels, boarding
houses, a school, Butter Factory and a Union
Church. It was a convenient stopping place
before the hazardous climb up the mountain.
Governor-General, Lord NORTHCOTE, paid the
district a visit in 1907, and coming down
Big Jack his conveyance had an accident,
throwing some of the passengers out on the
road - luckily not the Governor-General -
so they were probably pleased to see the
township of Rocky Hall where they could rest
and recover. That accident was not an isolated
incident from all accounts. Even today, while
it is a very pretty drive, the road still
needs to be treated with caution.
The school had 70-80 children in the early
part of the 1900s, but when the main road
to Bombala was changed to the less steep
Mount Darragh route in 1931, the whole village
fell on hard times, until today it is little
more than a community centre for the surrounding
district. The school closed in 1974 as a
result of lack of pupils, but in 1987 it
reopened as a pre-school.
The cemetery is situated approximately 3
kilometres south-east of Rocky Hall Community
Centre on the road to Towamba and Eden. To
get there you travel 1.8 kilometres west
out of Wyndham on the Mount Darragh Road
Turn left into New Buildings Road and then
travel 9.3 kilometres to the end of this
road. Turn right into the Big Jack Mountain
Road and travel 2.7 kilometres along this
road to Cemetery Road (just over Basin Creek
bridge) and turn left. The cemetery can be
quite clearly seen from the road and there
are two closed gates to get into it. It was
dedicated on 16th January 1880, and is set
in a large paddock, now largely overgrown.
Mowing is restricted owing to rare vegetation
found in the cemetery. A shelter with table
and seats has been erected near the gate.
The visible headstones and graves were first
transcribed on 9th March 1988 and checked
in June 1989, both times by Irwin and Joyce
PROWSE. In December 2004 the cemetery was
transcribe again by Bernard CORNELL, Barbara
and Nancy GRANT. In 2011 the cemetery was
photographed by Allan & Barbara CROWE.
Checking was done by Kate CLERY.
