Religious Order at "Subiaco" on

Professed on 30 Nov 1893. She took the religious
name of Sister Mary Romanus McKee. Her Vow
Paper was hand painted and extraordinarily
beautiful according to Sr. Hildegard Ryan
(Archivist at Jamberoo Abbey) and a copy
is held on file. Her entry in the Profession
Register reads:

|
Sr. (later Dame) M. Romanus alias |
The four McKee daughters of Joseph and |
"I Margaret McKee in Religion Sister
Mary Romanus, in acknowledgement of the favour,
this day conferred on me, by the Benedictine
Community of Subiaco, in admitting me into
their Monastery, as a Professed Choir Sister,
by the act of my Religious Profession, freely
and voluntarily made by me, in the presence
of his Lordship the Right Revd Joseph Higgins,
Lord Bishop of Sydney and under our Mother
Prioress, Mary Walburge, alias Ruth Wallis
- I hereby affix my signature this 30th day of November, Anno Domini 1893. Sister
Mary Romanus Alias Margaret McKee" This
was handwritten by Margaret and her vow paper
was handwritten in Latin as per above. Margaret's
obituary in the Benedictine Archives reads
as follows.
"1923, December 7, Dame (Margaret) M.
Romanus McKee. Born in New South Wales on
29th September 1864. Entered "Subiaco",
9th February 1888. Clothed, 29th January
1891. Professed, 30th November 1893. Dame
Romanus was for some years headmistress of
the school. She was also very skilful with
her hands, - at needle-work and, more unusually,
at wood-carving. It was she who carved the
three altar-panels in the church - the central
one with the "Pax" and Gothic roses,
and the side ones with Pugin roses. She also
made a fine stand for one of the statues.
She came from a close family which was much
concerned about her during her final illness.
Death came from nephritis, (kidney disease)."
She had died 7 Dec 1923 at Ryde (most likely
at Subiaco but registered at Ryde), NSW aged
59yrs. Information from Sr Hildegard Ryan
continues.
And regarding burial places. Her grave was
at "Subiaco" Rydalmere. When the
Cemetery was moved during the 1930s/40s,
the remains were re-interred at North Rocks
Catholic Cemetery.
They were re-interred in one mass Grave (another
story). Mother Benedicta Philips, first elected
Abbess, and Sr. Elizabeth Funder (Prioress)
had this mass grave restored during the early
1990s, and it has been a place of pilgrimage
for our community on important occasions,
such as our 150 in Australia (1999). I have
photographs of the gravesite. I can't send
them by email, but I can scan them (I think)
and make a copy for you. Or, I can send them
to you and you can make a copy. I think that
I have a photograph of Sr. Mary Romanus McKee
in Archives. She was a gifted wood-carver,
and at the moment, I am restoring some of
her work done in 1905. (email dated Oct 2009)
Photos dating back to the early 1920s were
obtained from the Benedictine Archives courtesy
Sr Hildegard Ryan. One shows the community
of Dames with Mother M Joseph and Mother
M Justina and the other a group of Dames
with Mother M Joseph and the peg dog.

Obituary from 1937 in Cowra Newspaper reads:
"Following an operation performed about
10 days previously, the death took place
at Cowra District Hospital on Tuesday morning
of Mr. Alfred Sylvester Eugene Richards.
He was 71 years of age. The late Mr. Richards
was one of Cowra's best liked citizens. A
smiling countenance and a cheery word bespoke
the wonderful nature of a fine old gentleman.
He had an army of friends but not a single
enemy. He was a constructive character, ever
ready to give assistance where it was needed,
ever alert to cheer anyone struck by misfortune.
His passing will be genuinely felt. In his
younger days the late Mr. Richards was a
keen cricketer, his batting performances
on the south coastal areas being still highly
regarded. With the passing of the years and
growing infirmity his interest never dwindled.
Every time a match was in progress at the
Cowra cricket ground the old familiar figure
would be noticed. He was Vice-president of
the Cowra Cricket Club to the time of his
death. Also a keen footballer, the late Mr.
Richards represented the Country against
City. Born at Bodalla on the South Coast,
deceased received his early education at
the local school and later attended Fort
Street High School, Sydney. He later entered
the Education Department and first took up
duties at Square Range, Nimmitabel, on the
Monaro. Here he married Miss Lucy McKee.
He later transferred to Tarraganda near Bega.
In 1925 he retired from the service and came
to live at Cowra, where he has resided ever
since. The late Mr. Richards was a member
of the Masonic Lodge. In addition to his
wife, he is survived by four sons. Bert of
Bethungra, John Kenneth of Cowra, Harry of
Lithgow, and Fred of Lismore, and three daughters,
Sister Ausberta, St. Josephs Convent, Bondi,
Mrs. O'Dwyer of Lithgow, and Mrs. A. Koychen
of Milton. Another daughter, Mrs. C.A. Allen
died about three years ago. The funeral moved
from St Johns CE, Cowra, yesterday morning
for interment in the CE portion of the Cowra
cemetery. The large number of friends who
followed the hearse was eloquent testimony
of the high regard in which deceased was
held. There were representatives of the commercial,
Local Government and sporting sections of
the community. Ven Archdeacon Mirrington
officiated at the Church and at the graveside."
