Ralph Agar......" I am the servant to

I watched him, and saw him take the shoes,

Guilty, Aged 18.

First Middlesex Jury, Before Mr. Recorder.
( 'The area' referred to is the courtyard
adjacent to the basement of a building and
railed off from the street pavement. This
area gives access to the basement for deliveries
and is visible to pedestrian traffic passing
along the footpath. Duchess Street is in
the Piccadilly area of London...there is
no Dutchess Street. As this is a well to
do area where Esquires and Colonels would
reside, it is assumed that it is the street
where George was captured.)

Catherine Sullivan was admitted to female
orphanage school on 3rd september,1830.
{Ref A.O. 4/350 & 351 F.O.S Admission

{Note: The orphan school was often an advantage
to the child of a poor family. They were
given an elementary education and skills.
The boys were apprenticed and the girls were
found employment. Families were not able
to take the child out until they reached
the age of 18. This was to prevent the child
from being dumped at an early age and then
collected as soon as they were old enough
to work or be useful to the parents.}
A Petition dated 27th December,1832 from
Francis Morrison and Catherine Morrison states:
" On The Death Of Mother (Mary Sullivan),
they took John, The younger brother Into
their home And now wish to have Catherine.
They are relatives."

It is not known at present what relationship
the Morrisons mentioned in this document
are to Catherine and John. The Morrisons
however were the sponsors of John at his
baptism 15/1/1826 at St Marys Cathedral

William Sullivan arrived In Australia on
Sunday, 24th July, 1808 On the Transport
Ship "Recovery" under Captain Bacon.
The Recovery had set sail from Portsmouth
on 21st of January and proceeded via Rio
De Janeiro then across the Southern Atlantic
and Indian Ocean.
Amongst the 117 troops on board, reinforcements
for The New South Wales Army Corp and Commanded
by Captain Cummings was Private William Sullivan,
his wife Mary and their two children. The
"Recovery" was a square-rigged
ship of 493 tons, built In Batavia (Now Jakarta)
In 1797.
William Sullivan was to become a member of
the 73rd Regiment. The history of the Military
of N.S.W up until 1815 is as follows:
1788 - 1792 Marines
1792 - 1810 New South Wales Corps
1809 Aug. NSW Corps renamed To 102nd Regiment
1810 Jan. 73rd Highlanders Regiment arrived
73rd takes on Volunteers from 102nd
Apr. residue of 102nd then returns to England
1810 - 1814 73rd Regiment, Australia
Aug,1814 - Dec 1815 73rd Regiment transferred
to Ceylon
[The following is an extract from Les Sullivans
research paper entitled " William and
Mary Sullivan - A North Coast NSW Pioneer
Family" ]
In 1808, a muster or census of all the people
in the Colony gave a very complete description
of the soldiers and there was Private William
Sullivan with sufficient information to enable
me (LesSullivan) to identify him, despite
a large ink blot obscuring part of the original
entry, and confirmed that he was indeed the
right William Sullivan. He was described
as being of dark complexion with hazel eyes,
black hair and round visage (face). He was
originally from the parish of Canbirk, town
of Westport in County Mayo, Ireland. His
son on registering his fathers death in 1860
had given his birthplace as Cork, Ireland
and his age as 90 years. In the Return of
Men who volunteered to transfer from the
102nd to the 73rd Regiment his age was given
as 33 (in 1810) and the term of military
service as seven years. Thus we have two
possible dates for his birth: 1770 if he
was 90 when he died;1777 if he was 33 in
1810. The last appears the most likely correct
date.
Research by a professional researcher in
London has provided additional information
on Private William Sullivan prior to 1808
which shows that he was not a model soldier.
In the Army quarterly muster rolls for the
28th Regiment of Foot for June-July 1807
there is a note "Confined by Civil Power
in Chelmsford Gaol 16th July" and for
the period July-September 1807, "Transferred
to service abroad for life". (end of
extract)
{Note :- Some of the N.S.W Corps were transferred
directly from the Savoy Prison as deserters,
but it looks as though William had broken
a civil law and he probably had the choice
of facing trial or 'volunteering' for service
abroad.
War Office records show the following in
relation to William Sullivan:-

{The above notes were supplied by Janet Robinson,
Soc. of Gen.}
Pay records of the military in the period
1808-1810 show William Sullivan as a private
on the strength of the N.S.W Regiment of
Foot between:-
25th June and 25th September,1808,
25th December,1808 and 24th January,1809

24th October,1809 and 24th November,1809
24th February,1810 and 24th March,1810
On the muster list of 27th June,1810 his
name is missing.

received extra pay for length of service:-
14 years service (pound 4.0.6), 7 years and
under 14 years (pound 3.12.10), under 7 years
(pound 3.5.2). As Williams appears in the
second column he must have been in the army
between 7 & 14 years, therefore joining
the army between 1796 and 1803. {War Office
records calculate this at 1802}
William Sullivan left with the 73rd Regiment
for Ceylon (Sri Lanka) on 24th March, 1814
after embarking either in the "General
Hewitt" and the "Windham"
or as a member of the rear party of the Regiment
sailing from Sydney, January,1815 in the
"General Brown" and the brig "Kangaroo".
The next record of William has him being
transported back to Australia as a convict.
According to the Muster papers of the "HUNTER",
William Sullivan was found guilty of receiving
stolen goods.

( A military guard was to be provided for

not a convict ship and on this voyage carried
18 horses, muslin, piece goods and cargo
from Calcutta. It seems that it also carried
Mary Sullivan and her children Margaret,
Patrick and Mary Jnr. This however can not
be verified as the passenger records of the
"HUNTER" have been lost.)
WILLIAM SULLIVAN - the years between 1828
- 1860
William Sullivan died at Austral Eden, on
the Macleay River on 7th January,1860, aged
90, {see Note (1) over page}.
The 1828 Census had shown that he had indeed
moved from Sydney to the North Coast of N.S.W
and was no longer with his wife as can be
seen by the following extract.
This reference(Ref 52767) for 106 Kent Street,
more than likely supplied by Mary Sullivan
as the responsible member of her family is
as follows (in part) :-
WILLIAM SULLIVAN - Freed of servitude AGE

MARY SULLIVAN - Came free
AGE - 45
ARRIVED - 1816..."HUNTER"
RELIGION - Catholic
OCCUPATION - Laundress

An earlier (1822) Muster/census for William
Sullivan recorded:

Note(2) over page)
Children - Patrick BORN: Came free AGE: 12
- Mary (jnr) BORN: Came free AGE: 7
- William (II) BORN: Colony AGE: 4
- Catherine BORN: Colony AGE: 2
(see Note(3) over page)
Margaret/Martha would have been 18 during
this 1822 Muster and would have been married
and registered as residing with George Parker.
Child Patrick Sullivan does not appear in
the 1828 Census as he would have been 18
years old and may have died or left home.
There were no children older then Margaret
Sullivan as can be seen in a letter written
from Gov. Sec J. T. Campbell to C.M. Ricketts,
Fort William, Bengal, dated 15/10/1816 reads
as follows:
{Ref .. Colonial Secretaries Letters..Archive
office 4/3521}
" Wife and three children granted passage
on ship 'HUNTER' but now leaving on ship
'MARY' 25/7/1817"(see Note(4) over page)
(The children referred to must have been
Margaret, Patrick & Mary)
NOTE (1): This would make his birth year
1770 and not 1777 as previously deduced so
we should assume this age is in error. The
witness, William (II) states that children
still living at time of death were William
(II), aged 40 and John, aged 30. According
to the 1828 census William (II) should have
stated that he was 42 years old (b.1818)
and John was 36 (b.1824). The four deceased
children reported on the death certificate
by William (II) may be Margaret (d.1853),
Patrick, Mary and Catherine.}
NOTE (2): According to L.Sullivan, when William
(II) died in 1879 the second informant was
his son John George who gave his grandmothers
name as Mary, nee Hayes.
NOTE (3): According to L.Sullivan, Mary is
listed in the records of baptism at St Phillips
Church, Sydney as having been born on 12th
July,1813 and baptised 25th July,1813. William
(II) is said to have been born on 16th May,1818
and baptised 27th September,1818. Therefore
Mary should have been 9 and not 7 at this
muster.
NOTE (4): The Sullivan women claimed they
arrived on the "HUNTER" and not
the "MARY" so passage must have
been found for them on the "HUNTER"
after the letter was written by Cambell in
Bengal.
The 1828 Census information was taken from
the people themselves rather than compiled
by documentation so it must be assumed that
the Sullivans did arrive on the "HUNTER"
as they have stated in both census collections
however the Muster Papers of the "HUNTER"
on A.O Micro roll show the arrival date of
the "HUNTER" to be 13/4/1817 so
the arrival date of 1816 stated in these
census results may prove the mother and daughter
in error of arrival date. Why didn't the
Sullivans state that they arrived in 1808
on the "RECOVERY" as was the case.
William Sullivans death certificate states
that he died primarily of natural decay and
secondarily of gangrene after an illness
lasting eight months. He had been attended
to by Dr C.L. Gabriel who last saw him on
12th November,1859 and was buried at Christmas
Creek on 8th January, 1860 by William Dunkley
and performed by Rev. F.R. Kemp of Port Macquarie.
The location of this cemetery is not certain.
Further information on the decendants of
William Sullivan can be made by obtaining
a copy of the family history entitled:-
" William and Mary Sullivan - A North
Coast NSW Pioneer Family" written by
Les Sullivan, Wg Cdr RAAF (Retd).
SUMMARY OF GEORGE AND MARGARET PARKER
George Parker, born in Hertfordshire in 1798
was arrested at the age of 18 and bought
before the Old Bailey on the 21st of June,
1815. He was indicted for stealing shoes
from a basement courtyard window of No. 5
Duchess Street, in the the Piccadilly area
of London on the 22nd of May, 1815. The shoes
were the property of Mr Robert Branch, a
butler, who was in the service of George
Burchell Esq. George Parker had scaled down
a ladder to the courtyard area and removed
the shoes that had been placed on the window
sill ready for cleaning. As he was climbing
the ladder to escape he was detained by Ralph
Agar, a passing servant who forced George
to return down the ladder and subsequently
be arrested. George Parker was found guilty
and sentenced to seven years transportation.
George Parker arrived in Sydney (24/3/1817)
on the "Shipley" having already
served eighteen months of his seven year
sentence in Middlesex Gaol. The ship left
England on the 18th of December,1816 and
sailed directly to Australia (67 days) which,
in that time, was uncommon.
The next record of George Parker has him
marrying Margaret Sullivan at St Phillips
Church, Sydney, 12th August,1820. He was
22, she 16.
** Background history of Margaret Sullivan
**
Margaret/Martha Sullivan was the daughter
of an Irish father who had joined the Army
in 1802. Margaret and her brother Patrick
arrived in Australia with their parents,
William and Mary Sullivan on the "Recovery"
in 1808. Her father had arrived in Australia
as a member of the Regiment of Foot following
a civil conviction in England that had him
'volunteer' for service abroad for the rest
of his life.
William Sullivan transferred from the 102nd
Regiment in 1810 to the 73rd Regiment which
remained in Australia until it was transferred
to Ceylon in March of 1814 . During this
period William and Mary had another daughter,
Mary Jnr (b. 1813)
No documentation exists as to how the family
followed William to Ceylon ,however, according
to Martha Sullivan in 1828 and her mothers
(Mary) report in the 1822 census, both claim
that they arrived in Australia aboard the
"HUNTER" which sailed from Calcutta.
William Sullivan was arrested in Ceylon for
receiving stolen property on 6/10/1815. After
being arrested, William Sullivan , now aged
35, was detained in the Colombo jail undertaking
hard labour , then transferred to Fort William,
Bengal for shipment via Calcutta to Australia.
All in all, a year of detention in India
and Ceylon before being transported in late
1816, arriving in Australia 13/4/1817 aboard
the "HUNTER".
Another son was born to William and Mary
in 1818, William (II) born in Sydney. A further
daughter, Catherine born in 1820. William
Sullivans sentence was for seven years which
would have him freed in 1822, so it appears
the family was maintaining contact whilst
he was serving his time.
Summary of George and Margaret Parker ......(cont)
George was still a convict at the time of
his marriage (1820) with two more years to
serve. He was a protestant whereas Margaret
came from a Catholic family. The marriage
certificate however shows her religion to
be Protestant. Their first son George Jnr.
was born in 1821. It would be unusual for
a Catholic girl to renounce her religion
when marrying a Protestant. Margaret may
have fallen pregnant out of wedlock, been
excommunicated by her church because of her
state and changed her religion to that of
her new husband, or have been declared Protestant
due to the denomination of the church where
she married as the first Catholic church
to be built in Sydney was not until 1821.
Margaret Sullivan wrote to the Governor to
obtain permission to marry as was required
of convicts wishing to wed. She wrote or
had written on her behalf:
"Praying His Excellency the Governors
permission to have their names published
in church in order to their being married"

George Parker finished his sentence of seven
years and was freed of servitude in 1822,
the same year that his second son, William
was born. His first daughter, Mary Ann, was
born in 1825.
The 1828 Census shows that George Parker
and Martha (Margaret) were living in 106
Kent Street, Sydney with their 4 children
(George Jnr-7, William-6,Mary Ann-3 and Samuel-
9 mnths). This Census also shows that Margarets
mother, Mary Sullivan was living at the same
address with her 4 children (Mary Jnr-12,
William-10, CATHERINE-7 and John-4). A total
of 3 adults and eight children.
In a petition to the orphanage to admit Catherine
Sullivan dated 27th August 1830, Margaret
Parker states that Catherine Sullivans mother
is dead and that her father is believed to
be at Newcastle or on the Hunter River. She
states that her address is now Clarence Street
and that she is poor and unable to support
the child.
Little more is known of this Parker family
other than the death of Margaret Parker in
1853 and her burial at Camperdown Cemetery
(now St. Stevens Church, Newtown). The family
of Samuel, third son of George and Margaret
Parker follows immediately

the Moruya Roman Catholic Baptism Register
made by Ted Williams it was discovered that
in addition to those children identified
by Violet (identified by a #) there were
also a few others marked above with an asterix.
Baptism dates and parents residence are shown.
Samuel Parker remarried in 1877 to Eliza
Higgens when he was aged 48 at Pambula and
there were no children from this marriage,
therefore any children the records show of
children being born to Samuel after Ambrose
are false listings.)
A note obtained from Mick Parker written
by Mick Parker in response to questions asked
in the weeks prior to Walters (SON OF SAMUEL
(2)] death revealed the following in point
form:-
Samuel (1) born Hawkesbury River. Died 1917
aged 88. Birth 26 November. Was 14 when he
came to Eden. Married Mary Cusack- came from
Ireland. His fathers name was George came
from England. Grand mother (Walters) born
in India. Sargeants [Samuel (1)] brothers
George and Bill built old brick houses at
Pambula. One was killed by falling off a
building (George) the other choked while
eating meat (Bill) {See Page 53} . Sargeants
nephew (William) was a jeweler in Sydney.
William Parker dropped dead. Sargeants father
owned a block with store house on it at Wynyard
Square.
( NOTE: Mick Parker had heard stories of
this property and that the ownership of it
was exchanged in a card game. The story goes
that the property owner was sort by Authorities
for unpaid rates and that after advertising
for the owner to come forward, the property
returned to the Crown.) (V.A notes possible
exchange for a bottle of grog)
The following sections of this Family history
shall deal with the children of the marriage
of Samuel and Mary Cusack.
In order to allow an ease of updating this
data, it was considered necessary to separate
the lineage of each of Samuels children,
so that I could deal with these branches
one at a time. Where possible and as time
and research would allow, I have noted the
origins of spouses not of the Parker line.
In turn, I have dealt briefly with the current
generation in hope that the living descendants
can further add to this story by expanding
on the present.
The sections of this family history shall
now be defined in six separate areas and
deal specifically with the descendants of:-

THE FAMILY HISTORY OF SAMUEL PARKER AND JESSIE
OLIVER (BORN 1853) (born 1859)
*** SAMUEL PARKER [2] (Grandson of George)
****
(known as Goka)
BORN: 21/4/1853 Rocky Hall
DIED: 19/10/1933 {V.A}
BURIED: Delegate {A.P} (See CEMETERIES)
Samuel Parker [2] married Jessie Oliver 25/4/1877.
born: 6/8/1859 {V.A}
died: 13/11/1937
(Jessie buried Goulburn- grave disturbed
due to hospital extensions - now lost {A.P})
Samuel [2] lived in Towamba and had a farm
that dealt with mixed farming of corn and
pigs. the farm was turned into a dairy when
Samuel's son Walter took it over. The farm
was called "Sunnyside" and was
the third residence built by Samuel. The
first was built down by the river on the
flats but it met with difficulties being
so close to the river when it flooded. The
second , a slab hut, was built, a little
higher. All that remains of this now is a
walnut tree that was in the house yard. The
third house was built on the ridge overlooking
the Towamba river and was originally called
Clifton Lodge, to be renamed "Sunnyside".
Violet Allen remembers the ceiling of this
house being made of hession with paper "wallpapered"
to it. The effect was a billowing ceiling
each time the wind blew. Eric Parker took
over Sunnyside @ 1943

PASSING OF WELL RESPECTED CITIZEN
The death occurred in Bega district of Eric
Oliver Parker on January 1, 1980 aged 72.
Eric was born at Towamba and was the eldest
son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Walter Parker
formerly of Towamba until they retired but
lived the latter part of their life at Bega.
Eric went to school at Towamba but later
assisted his parents on the land. He later
worked for the late Reg Johnstone, the late
Os Gutherie and many more. He served with
the C.M.F. during W W 11.
Eric is survived by two daughters of his
first marriage. They are Thelma (Mrs. Shelley,
Cobargo) and Joyce (Mrs. Payne) of Nowra
and two grandsons, Peter and Trevor.
Eric is survived by a widow of his second
marriage Rachel and six adult step-children.
Up until the time of death of this well respected
man who was a keen sportsman, he had the
title of champion shooter of the Bega Rifle
Club and also champion bowler with the Candelo-Kameruka
Bowling Club.
Even after his major operation of having
his legs amputated he was presented with
a special chair from Cronulla Bowling Club.
Many a time, Eric was called away from his
dinner to assist a motorist who had broken
down at Wolumla.
Eric has six sisters and one brother. He
was also a member of the Wolumla Bushfire
Brigade and Wolumla Hall Committee and held
his driving licence up until his passing.
In all that time he was not involved in one
traffic accident.
Walter and Mary lived at Sunnyside when Eric
took over. Walter and Marys house "Peaceful
Hills" was pulled down and the materials
used to build a new home in town when Eric
took over Sunnyside. (assumption that Peacefull
Hills may have been a house on the Sunnyside
property. The relocated Peacefull Hills became
"Dellril" by Walter and Mary. "Delrill"
became "Parklea".
Samuel made the trek to Delegate one day
with Jessie to see her family and apparently
took sick whilst there. This accounts for
his burial there. Jessie lived with Walter
and Mary after Samuels death but had to finally
take up residence in Kenmore Hospital, Goulburn
due to a bad heart that made caring for her
at home difficult. Jessie died at Kenmore
and was buried in the grounds however her
grave was destroyed when extensions to the
hospital began.
'Magnet' October 28, 1933
MR. SAMUEL PARKER
Mr. Samuel Parker, whose death occurred at
Delegate on the 19th instant, was born at
Rocky Hall on April, 23, 1853 and was thus
aged 80 years and 6 months. He lived at Towamba
all his life. Years ago he used to drive
a horse team between Pericoe and Eden and
later when the Yambulla-Eden mail was run
by coach, he had the contract for nine years.
At times when carrying gold to Eden from
the Yambulla mine he was escorted by police
officers Campion and Meek. Afterwards he
took up farming on one of his father's farms
at Towamba. He leaves a wife, two children,
Mrs. G. Lewis, Dungay, and Walter William
Parker, Towamba, 14 grandchildren and 19
great-grandchildren. Two brothers are also
living, Ambrose, Towamba and John, Bega.
*** The Family of JESSIE OLIVER **** (wife
of Samuel Parker)
Jessie Oliver was the daugter of Adam Oliver
and Janet Mahon. A photocopy of the Oliver
family tree was obtained through Mick Parker
(original source unknown...see DOCUMENTS
for copy) plus an old piece of paper with
a tree structure showing Adam Oliver and
decendants with dates of marriages, births
and deaths where possible. A combination
of this data is as follow :-
The OLIVER Family Tree.
1 - Adam Oliver. b.1742-married-Betty Familton.
b. 1755
2 - Adam Oliver. b.1755/6/7-married-Mary
Hall. b.1771
d.9/7/1848.. d.24/9/1856..
both buried- Jedburgh Abbey
They had a family consisting of Adam, Andrew,
Ann, Thomas & Mary.
3 - Adam Oliver.b.1803-married-Elizabeth
Cumming.b.1804
d.11/1/1877 d.1882
both buried- Delegate
4 - Adam married Elizabeth 20/10/1826 and
they had a family of..
Adam, WILLIAM, Janet and Mary.
William came to Australia with his wife Jane
Inglis on the "HUMBOLT" and landed
in Australia on 19/12/1852. They came as
bounty immigrants which I think means they
were bound to work for the person who nominated
them. This was John Nicholson, at the time
a large landholder on the Monaro or as it
was called then, the Manaroo.
William in turn sponsored his brother Adam
(b.11/9/1827- d. 20/12/1899) and wife m.26/1/1885)
Janet Mahon (b. 18/8/1832 d. 24/3/1904) together
with his other sisters Janet and Mary as
well as other brother Thomas. He also sponsored
his father Adam and mother Elisabeth. They
came to Australia on the "BEE"
and arrived here on the 6/1/1856. William
having paid their fare (ú32/10/0) and both
Adams paying ú5.0.0 per piece.
They also went to work as shephards and farm
labourers on the Monaro. Adam and Elizabeth
are buried at Delegate (Adam d.1877 - Elizabeth
d.1882) but we can find no trace of their
graves. Adam and Janet are also buried at
Delegate (Adam d.21/12/1899 - Janet d.1904)
and Joe Oliver who is a grandson still looks
after their graves. The early Olivers I have
been able to trace were for generations burgess
of Jedburgh (Magistrates) and were relatively
well to do members of the commercial community.
Prior to 1603 the Olivers, who were border
people used to participate in border raiding
and were operating under the protection of
the Kerrs who used to obtain their pardons
in the civil courts. They (the Olivers) shared
their plunder with them (the Kerrs).
Originally the Olivers held their lands directly
from the King but eventually, in order to
more effectively control them, their lands
were given to the Douglas family who were
made responsible for the good behaviour of
the Oliver surname.
The Olivers apparently came from places like
Liesliesleof Chapel and Castlewood Park,
all around the Jedburgh area of Roxburghshire,
Scotland.
However when they came to Australia, they
came as shepherds and farm labourers. I have
traced some relatives of Adam and Elizabeth.
A brother Thomas has descendents still farming
land in the Kelso district which is near
Jedburgh. Adam and Janet were married at
Bedrule in Roxburghshire at Rue Castle Bedrule
on 26/1/1855. They had nine children - Elisabeth,
Mary, Jessie, Adam, Agnes, William, Thomas,
Isabella and Cecilia. (END OF TEXT)
[ Note...The original photocopies have various
spellings for Jedburgh that include Jedburgh,
Jedberry and Jedirgh. The town of Jedburgh
is in the County of Borders, Scotland.
The identity of the writer is unknown so
when the document refers to "I",
it is not Lei Parker.]

What follows is the information supplied
to me on two loose leaf notes and
two photocopies of relevant documentation
made available by Mick Parker(Writing comparisons

possible the dates are cross checked to documented
sources, however some of the following is
unsubstanciated. For ease of veiwing this
particular branch of the family, a tree diagram
is attatched.
*** ELIZABETH ANN MITCHELL ( mother of Mary
Matilda Clements) ***
The story begins with Edward Mitchell, the
son of Edward and Nancy Mitchell arriving
in Sydney 27/7/1857 aboard the "TARTAR"
with his wife Anne Kendall (b. Cornwall,
daughter
of Thomas and Mary Kendall). They had been
married six years (4/10/1821...1823 by death

(NOTE: The death certificate of Ann Mitchell,
informed by son Thomas states that at time
of Anns death the children of the marriage
of Ann and Edward Mitchell comprised all
of the above with the exception of Nancy,
Mary and Susan. It seems odd that he neglected
to mention these. (see DOCUMENTS for full
Transcription of Anns' Death Certificate.)
Anne Mitchell died 12/3/1873 at Wolumla {RBDM

married Jane Nicholas on 2/7/1854 (see DOCUMENTS).
Jane was born in 1828 and died 13/11/1864.

Aunty Pike ran the Hotel Australasia in Eden.
The 1912 Trades directory gave her name as

of Jane Underhill and Edmund Mitchell. VA
states that "Aunty Pike" was running
the Hotel Australasia. Violet being born
in 1921 would have been 9 years old when
Serbina Pike had the hotel licence.
*** WILLIAM CLEMENTS (father of Mary Matilda
Clements) ***
A photocopy of the obituary of William Clements
was made available to me by Mick Parker (source
Eden Magnet newspaper). It is as follows:-
TOWAMBA
The late Mr. Clements. A Typical Pioneer.
(1924)
As mentioned in the last issue of the "MAGNET",
Mr William Clements, senior, one of the oldest
and most respected pioneers of the district
passed peacefully away on Tuesday of last
week (June 24th), at his home "Model
Farm", Towamba, at the age of 80 years.
The following brief additional reference
to his career will doubtless be of interest
to many of our readers.
Mr Clements was a native of County Tyrone,
Ireland. Strongly imbued with the spirit
of pioneering, he, as a young man, embarked
for Australia and arrived in New South Wales
on October 9th,1863 in the sailing ship "SEVERN".
His shipmates included Messers B.H.McCabe
(Lochiel), R. Cunnane (Eden) and M. McMahon
(once of Merimbula), all now deceased. He
first went to the Shoalhaven district where
he worked for a couple of years. He then
came to Eden, where he spent eight years
in the employ of Barclay and Co, who at the
time were merchants in a big way. During
his employment he saved a few hundred pounds
which he invested in the purchase from Mr
Stiles, a block of land at Towamba. This
he made his home and he resided there for
51 years.
He married, in 1874, a daughter of the late
Mr Edmund Mitchell, of Lower Towamba and
thereafter,with undeviating purpose, and
by hard work, good management and careful
saving, he assisted by his wife, developed
on of the best farms in the Towamba District.Mr
and Mrs Clements reared a family of nine
daughters and three sons. The daughters are
Mrs R. Gordon (Kyogle), Mrs J. Jaggers (Tweed
River), Mrs A. Whitby (Parramatta), Mrs A.
Parker (Towamba), Mrs W. Parker (Towamba),
Mrs J.N. Harris (Kiah), Mrs Heathcote (Sydney),
Mrs Jones and Mrs E.Love (deceased). The
sons, Messers Edmund, Arthur and William
Clements reside in Towamba. Their are 44
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
At the funeral, which took place at Towamba,
the Rev. J.L. Forbes, who officiated, referring
to the deceased gentleman, spoke of him as
a man of exemplary character, honest, straightforward
and upright, a pioneer of the right type,
one who had helped to make the district and
one whom the district could ill afford to
lose. He was steadfast adherent to his church
and regularly attended divine service as
long as health permitted. a very large attendance
at the funeral, the arrangements for which
were in the hands of Mr W. Ryan, Bega, evidenced
the general esteem in which the deceased
gentleman was held, and some beautiful wreaths
were placed upon the coffin, which was of
polished oak. All the deceased's children
now living, with the exception of Mrs Jaggers
( Tweed River), were present at the graveside.

THE FAMILY HISTORY OF WILLIAM PARKER (Son
of SAMUEL )
*** WILLIAM PARKER ***
(known as Bill)
BORN: 1855
Bill never married. Athol (Mick) Parker remembers
a story of Bill walking from Neathercote
to Towamba but getting lost for 12 days to
eventually be found by the dogs of sawmillers
in the Myrtle Creek area. Mick was 10 years
old when this happened which would place
the event at 1919 with Bill Parker being
64 years old.
VA says that Bill didn't keep in contact
with the family and may have moved south
to the Orbost area. Una recalled that Bill
died at a old mans home in Lidcome when she
was 16 which would make it about 1927.(worth
more investigation)
Note: The Register of Baptisms - Roman Catholic
Church ,Moruya records that a son Thomas
was born 13/6/1855 and baptised 17/9/1855
to parents Samuel and Mary residing at Pambula.
Thomas may be Bill as everyone seemed to
alternate their names.

THE FAMILY HISTORY OF GEORGE EDWARD PARKER
and ELIZA PLUMB
**** GEORGE EDWARD PARKER ***
Born: 20/1/1852
Baptised at Eden 20/6/1852
Died: 7/11/1901 (death registered in Eden)
buried : unknown
Married: Eliza Theresa Plumb b.6.11.1855
(Launceston) d.30.9.1926
(Marriage Registered at Eden 1879 No.8405
\ 1879.3009)
(daughter of William Plumb and {m. Sydney
1858} Mary Anne Winning {d. Eden 1873}
In researching this family, one Mr George
Edward Parker presented problems as I had
no proof of his birth. Birth Deaths and Marriage
records were not well maintained and genealogy
is driven by proof.
On the death certificate of Samuel (1) dated
15/5/1917 it states that Samuel (1) had 5
children by his first marriage being Samuel
(2) aged 64 (1853),William 62 (1855), John
58 (1859), James A 51(1866) and Ambrose 45
(1872). It then states that there were no
deceased children. (what then of George Edward
died 1901 and Maria died 1911 - an obvious
omission).
Many years passed and fortunately for this
leg of the family an interesting chain of
events unfolded. E.R Williams was investigating
his own family tree and looking through the
baptism register of the Moruya Catholic Church.
He noticed Samuel Parker and Mary Cusack
listed and there at the top of the baptism
list of children born to Samual and Mary
sat George Edward born 20/1/1852 and baptised
as the son of Samuel and Mary on 20/6/1852.
George Edward irrefutably belongs according
to the church and thats enough for me.
George Edward married Eliza Plumb. Eliza's
father, William Plumb, was a master baker
and came to Tasmania bringing the first bake
oven to Launceston. William Plumb is reported
to have built the Eden Bakery on moving to
the South Coast of NSW.
The controversy:
I had been led to believe that "Aunty"
Una was a cousin of my Aunt Bessie, however
in the quest to establish this family tree,
I found no documentation to support her belonging
genetically to the Parkers. Una's father,
George Arthur "Parker" was taken
in to the family of George Edward Parker
at the age of three following the marriage
of his mother Eliza Plumb to George Edward
Parker. A birth certificate was provided
by Bev Francis in 1997 proving George Arthur
to be the illegitimate child of Eliza Plumb
June 13, 1951
'The Sydney Morning Herald'
PARKER, George Arthur.-June 8, 1951, at Pambula
District Hospital, of Towamba my dearly beloved
husband, loved father of Una (Mrs. Halliday),
May (Mrs. Stevenson), Tom, Jim, and Gwen,
aged 76 years.
Questions regarding George A's legitamacy
had been put to the older remaining members
of this family from Bega and either a blank
wall or conjecture was encountered each time...
however Bessie asked Una about her father
George Arthur and a story unfolded, scant
as it was.
"George Arthurs mother was Eliza Plumb
and when George Arthur was little he lived
next door to Una's great grand mother Prike
who would feed George Arthur as he was kept
tied up (supposedly under the house). Eventually
Una's grandmother Walters looked after George
Arthur and that was how Una's mother (Hebe)
met George Arthur, finally marrying him."
{B.M}
"George Arthur was given a hard time
by the community and spent a fair amount
of time with the aboriginals up by the Towamba
Cemetery. He once attempted to kill a Mitchell
(rumoured to be his father) but no charges
were pressed by Mitchell." {Bev Francis
1997 - a family story}
Eliza (aged 51) remarried John Parker (aged
47), her brother in law , in 1906. His wife
Mary had died and he would have been left
with five children (Nina - 8, George Henry
- 9 , Maud -13,John L.-13, (twins) Martha
- 18). George Edward parker had died in 1901
aged 52. This left Eliza with 10 children,
the Eldest George Arthur aged 26 and the
youngest Eric L. being 2.
Note: * Mrs. John Parker gave birth to twins
daughters on October 1st. 1893 at Burragate

(See CEMETERIES)
Remarried: Sophia ????
James Parker was born in Towamba and stayed
there until around 1911 before selling his
farm to Ambrose Parker and moving away from
the valley. (According to the book written
by his son Jim entitled "The Echos are
Calling" James took the family to Sydney
soon after the death of his wife May. {May
Matheson became ill and was moved to Sydney,
however died soon after. Her body was returned
to Towamba for burial}.) James was a corn
and pig farmer for a period of time in Towamba
and evidence of this can be seen in a photograph
(in the collection of Violet Allen) taken
from Samuels property, across the river showing
James' farm. Old slabsheds are still to be
found on this property (1993). Old Parish
maps show that James owned several sections
of farmland in the Towamba township. To obtain
a copy of these plans, it is necessary to
approach the Dept of Lands in Sydney.
James remarried Sophia ???? after moving
to Sydney and they resided at Forest Lodge,
Kensington Rd, Summer Hill. James and Sophia
had a daughter Merle. As a half sister, Merle
inherited from Dud (Roy)'s estate. The last
address for Merle was 10 Dawn Drive, Seven
Hills, Sydney. {B.M}

accepts her as a Parker yet she does not
appear on this document.)
Ben Beasley and Maria (pronounced Mah-rye-ah)

their own, a daughter Bertha (b.1892) who

*** ELIZABETH MITCHELL ( mother of Edith

(NOTE: The death certificate of Ann Mitchell,
informed by son Thomas states that at time
of Anns death the children of the marriage
of Ann and Edward Mitchell comprised all
of the above with the exception of Nancy,
Mary and Susan. It seems odd that he neglected
to mention these. (see DOCUMENTS for full
Transcription of Anns' Death Certificate.)
Anne Mitchell died 12/3/1873 at Wolumla {RBDM

*** WILLIAM CLEMENTS (father of Edith Clements)

A photocopy of the obituary of William Clements
was made available to me by Mick Parker.
It is as follows:-
TOWAMBA
The late Mr. Clements. A Typical Pioneer.
(1924)
As mentioned in the last issue of the "MAGNET",
Mr William Clements, senior, one of the oldest
and most respected pioneers of the district
passed peacefully away on Tuesday of last
week (June 24th), at his home "Model
Farm", Towamba, at the age of 80 years.
The following brief additional reference
to his career will doubtless be of interest
to many of our readers.
Mr Clements was a native of County Tyrone,
Ireland. Strongly imbued with the spirit
of pioneering, he, as a young man, embarked
for Australia and arrived in New South Wales
on October 9th,1863 in the sailing ship "SEVERN".
His shipmates included Messers B.H.McCabe
(Lochiel), R. Cunnane (Eden) and M. McMahon
(once of Merimbula), all now deceased. He
first went to the Shoalhaven district where
he worked for a couple of years. He then
came to Eden, where he spent eight years
in the employ of Barclay and Co., who at
the time were merchnats in a big way. During
his employment he saved a few hundred pounds
which he invested in the purchase from Mr
Stiles, a block of land at Towamba. This
he made his home and he resided there for
51 years. He married, in 1874, a daughter
of the late Mr Edmund Mitchell, of Lower
Towamba and thereafter, with undeviating
purpose, and by hard work, good management
and careful saving, he assisted by his wife,
developed on of the best farms in the Towamba
District. Mr and Mrs Clements reared a family
of nine daughters and three sons. The daughters
are Mrs R. Gordon (Kyogle), Mrs J. Jaggers
(Tweed River), Mrs A. Whitby (Parramatta),
Mrs A. Parker (Towamba), Mrs W. Parker (Towamba),
Mrs J.N. Harris (Kiah), Mrs Heathcote (Sydney),
Mrs Jones and Mrs E.Love (deceased). The
sons, Messers Edmund, Arthur and William
Clements reside in Towamba. Their are 44
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
At the funeral, which took place at Towamba,
the Rev. J.L. Forbes, who officiated, referring
to the deceased gentleman, spoke of him as
a man of exemplary character, honest, straightforward
and upright, a pioneer of the right type,
one who had helped to make the district and
onewhom the district could ill afford to
lose. he was steadfast adherant to his church
and regularly attended devine service as
long as health permitted. a very large attendance
at the funeral, the arrangements for which
were in the hands of Mr W. Ryan, Bega, evidenced
the general esteem in which the deceased
gentleman was held, and some beautiful wreaths
were placed upon the coffin, which was of
polished oak. All the deceased's children
now living, with the exception of Mrs Jaggers
( Tweed River), were present at the graveside.
